The deck replacement project is coming along, albeit at a slower pace than originally predicted, (see “Recent News”), but I’ve had the chance to spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying the flora and fauna as a result. Yesterday, as the sun was setting, I caught a glimpse of movement on the footpath to the south of the deck – it was an adult Gila monster out searching for food! It wandered along the path, eventually making its way up the slope, pausing to rest in the shade created by the perforated steel wall surrounding the deck on three sides.
Martha captured a number of fantastic images, but these two, (below), are my favorites – enjoy!
This is the second time we’ve seen this particular specimen in the past four weeks! Warmer weather in March meant desert reptiles of all shapes and sizes were coming out of hibernation early, (when compared to our experience in prior years). I’m willing to bet we might even enjoy a third visit from Mr. Monster this season, since quail are rather abundant here at the Byrne residence!
