Bruder on Byrne

“The residence is a series of abstract canyon walls and spaces that emerge as metaphoric geological gestures from its steep south facing desert site. With dramatically raking corbelled and tilting masonry and metal clad frame walls, the architectural embrace of the residence’s main entry, living and circulation gallery spaces is both original and invigorating. The structure’s angular geometry grows from the asymmetrical, tapering alignment of a ‘canyon’. The purple/black patinaed copper, acid etched galvanized metal roof lines deck soffits and buff colored masonry walls complement the colors of the undisturbed Sonoran desert from which it grows. Large window walls, patios and courtyards of shade and sun allow indoor/outdoor living throughout the desert calendar. In its scale, sculptural form and material simplicity the Byrne Residence is an organic architectural statement that enhances its unique desert setting.”

“The design concept of this residence was the creation of a series of abstract ‘canyon walls’ and spaces that emerge as metaphoric geological gestures from the natural desert site. The corbeled concrete masonry and metal-clad frame walls embrace the residence’s main entry, living and circulation/gallery spaces and provide focus to the angular geometry of the building as it grows from the asymmetrical, tapering alignments of the ‘canyon walls’, which in turn extend the design out into the undisturbed natural desert site, creating outdoor living spaces and courtyards. To complement and contrast the dominant masonry walls, naturally patinated copper and acid-etched galvanized metal-clad frame wall and fascia elements were created.  The purple/bronze and pewter grey color of these materials compliment the natural landscape and the rustic masonry. With each day’s varied sunlight, each surface changes in color, lending interest and surprise to the residence.”
